What Is An SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate is a product that provides encryption for information that is collected from your visitors. Without one, information they might enter into forms on your website could be snagged out of the sky by bots and hackers. It’s especially important to protect your visitors’ payment information if you sell online.

There are different kinds of certificates. Free versions only provide a superficial layer of protection between your visitor and your site, but do not protect information from your site to your server. If you need to cover multiple sites on the same hosting, you can get one certificate for up to 5 sites. A “wildcard” SSL will let you cover all subdomains on one domain name.
